Best Mattress Buying Guide for 2017 (Updated)

Looking for a new mattress? That’s Great, you are on the right page. This post is here to help you choose a perfect mattress you’ll love and admire. And yes, there are some hidden secrets and tips too ūüėČ Keep Reading.

It can be a tough decision if you’re not a regular mattress buyer. With hundreds of models, types, and makers it gets confusing and ultimately a headache to choose a mattress in the 20th century.

You may not be knowing but if we take the experts advice into consideration, then you should replace your mattress every 7-8 years. I know that’s a short period, but experts don’t listen to me anymore :p

If you’re looking to get rid of a mattress before buying a new one then you should read this post before moving further.

There are few things which you need to know for making a perfect mattress purchase you won’t regret after a year or two.

With this ‘how to choose a mattress in 2016‘ guide for beginners, I am hoping to help the maximum amount of mattress shoppers who are finding it difficult to find a good mattress or are confused between few good ones and need help making their final decision.

Why should you listen to me?

That’s an excellent question; you should know what that person has achieved and if he has any knowledge about what he is suggesting.

As you know, I am Quint Starr, and I have launched this blog as a way to share my knowledge and help people out.

For the past few years, I have been working as a seller into a furniture shop, and because of this I have quite a good knowledge about mattresses, beds, and furniture.

With that said, I have seen people struggling to find a good purchase and make their decision. It is not an easy task to buy a new mattress, and you need to research before buying because –

1. Mattress cost you hundreds of bucks (no one wants to waste their hard earned money)

2. You are the one who is going to sleep on this mattress for the next 8-10 years and

3. Mattress affects your health and mind, so only a comfortable and firm mattress can help you make better decisions in your life.

I hope now you will take my words a little seriously, and I won’t be ignored, wink.

Enough of the background, let’s get to work and start our ‘how to choose a mattress in 2016‘ guide.

I have always focused on the saying that a mattress is one of the investments you make for your health. You need to do it good, if not perfect.

If you’re in a hurry, scroll down to all the way down and check our recommended list of 10 best mattresses, and other approved products. Or here’s the best selling mattress of 2016 –¬†

However, I would recommend you to read this guide which will help you to choose one of them according to your needs.

Let’s kick start this guide with mattress sizes and dimensions.

Standard Mattress Dimensions

Mattresses are available in different sizes and they are named behind the bed sizes for which they are developed. Here are the names and dimensions of standard mattress sizes –

Mattress Sizes Dimensions (Inches)
California King 72 x 84
King 76 x 80
Queen 60 x 80
Full XL 54 x 79
Full 54 x 74
Twin XL 39 x 80
Twin 39 x 74

Twin size is the smallest mattress type with dimensions of 39 inches wider and 74 inches taller. And California King is the largest and most extensive mattress being 73 inches wider and 84 inches taller.

The most popular among all is Queen Size Mattress followed by Double Size Mattress.

If you are thinking which, mattress size is suitable for me? It depends on various factors like how many people are going to sleep on it, what’s your height and width and in which room you’re going to use it.

This post will help you decide the mattress size you should look for, depending upon the factors mentioned above.

Read it and decide your mattress size so we can move further. Take your time; we are in no hurry.

Done? Let’s start our second chapter.

Mattress Types

Depending upon which material is used to fill, the popular types of mattresses are –

Memory Foam Mattress

memory-foam-mattress-typeMemory Foam Mattresses (read review) are the most familiar and comfortable type of mattress you can buy. They use a high-density polyurethane foam for the support system. This foam can remold and provide contour to the sleeper. They are soft and also has a sensation of warmth.

There are three types of Memory Foam Mattress viz 1. Traditional 2. Gel-Memory and 3. Plant Based.

More about Memory Foam Mattress and Its Types

Latex Mattress

latex mattress typesLatex Mattress uses latex foam as the support system.

They are little cooler than Memory Foam Mattress and also can mold itself to support your body and posture.

They are Hypo Allergic, which is an added advantage since they can limit the growth of dust miles, bacteria & fungi. A perfect choice for Asthma sufferers.

Innerspring Mattress

inner-spring-mattress-typesInnerspring Mattress uses steel coil springs as the support system. They are distributed evenly throughout the mattress and are often by padding, which can be a layer of foam or another mini layer of coils. Greater the coil count is  greater support and comfort the mattress will be able to provide.

Foam Mattress

A Foam Mattress uses one or more types of foam for the support system. The foam can be memory (Visco) foam, polyurethane or latex foam. It can also contain gel or other materials to satisfy different needs of consumers.

Air Mattress

Air Bed or Air Mattresses are suitable for temporary bedding and use an adjustable air chamber as a support system. The allow you to adjust the firmness and usually have the ability to control the firmness of each side separately to meet individuals needs.

Gel Mattress

gel mattress typeIt uses a different type of foam which contains gel as the support system. There are different types of technology used to add gel into the foam. Gel Mattresses are suitable  for people looking for the medium firm or medium soft level of comfort.

There are few more types of mattresses which I will add to this guide in the coming time. For now, these types should do the work.

So now as you may have decided which size and type of mattress you want its time for some shopping tips.

Should I Buy a Mattress Online or Offline?

I would recommend you to shop online unless you live in my locality and are planning to buy from the store I work at, LOL.

Jokes aside, it’s your decision whether you want to shop online or prefer to buy from a nearby store.

Buying a Mattress Online has its advantages and disadvantages. I have done a separate post on Why to Buy Mattress Online, but let me quickly summarize it here too.

Advantages of Online Mattress Shopping

1. Convenience

Online shopping is convenient, whether you’re shopping for a mattress or ¬†a juicer, online shopping has made our lives easier than ever. When shopping online, the only tool you need is a computer with internet access.

Online shopping is convenient, whether you’re shopping for a mattress or ¬†a juicer, online shopping has made our lives easier than ever. When shopping online, the only tool you need is a computer with internet access.

Online shopping is convenient, whether you’re shopping for a mattress or ¬†a juicer, online shopping has made our lives easier than ever. When shopping online, the only tool you need is a computer with internet access. Online Shopping also saves buyers a lot of time as compared to physical shopping. It allows you to scroll through the catalog to see all the available mattresses and choose the one you like the most.

It will save you from traffic jams, harsh sunlight and driving/walking to every next store.

2. Comparison

With the modern technology, some sites also allow you to compare two or more products side by side. Compare all the different features and let your mind decide which one is perfect for you.

3. Choices

It can be regarded as the biggest plus point for the success of online stores such as Amazon. In a physical store, they have a limited stock due to the lack of storage and space in the warehouse.  Because of which the choices of products can be pretty slim. On the flip side, online stores have many warehouses across the country with large stock which is ready to be shipped as soon as an order arrives.

It gives many mattress options for buyers to choose and buy.

4. Competitive Prices

In an online marketplace, there are many sellers for a single product, and they all compete by keeping their prices low. While it ma or may not benefit a lot to the seller, it surely does for the buyer. Also, most of the mattresses are sold at a wholesale price which is already far less than the price you’ll get to hear from a physical retailer.

5. Collaborative Decision

Another good point in the favor of online shopping. With the busy schedule of every other member of your family, it makes it difficult to visit a store and take a collaborative decision while shopping offline. As I previously noted, buying a mattress is an investment, and the collaborative decision is what makes it worth the money spent.

But when you decide to make your purchase offline, you all can easily pass your opinions while sitting and relaxing on a good evening with a cup of coffee.

6. User’s Reviews

While in a store, you have two options; either decide all by yourself or go by the suggestion of the salesperson. In few cases, if a salesperson has a good knowledge of the subject, he can help you choose a best mattress. But what if he doesn’t? you are a first-time buyer and you want someone experienced to help you. It’s not the case with online stores.

Online stores have a section of user’s comments and you can read them to examine whether a mattress is providing quality to the buyers. Based on the average reviews and stars, it is easier to make your purchase.

8. No Salesperson Standing Near You

No explanation needed! We all know how irritating it can be to have a salesperson stand right by our side all the time and trying to sell a mattress we aren’t interested in. (No offence to few good salespersons out there, like me ūüėČ

Choose a Mattress Expert Advice

Disadvantages of Online Mattress Shopping

1. Extra Delivery Charges

While it’s not the case with major online mattress retailers (they provide free shipping on most of the products), you can be charged some handsome bucks in the name of delivery if you’re shopping from a least popular site.

Delivery charges can also be applied depending on the seller, your location and delivery span.

2. Can’t Apply SLEEP Rule

I’m not gonna take your time explaining what’s SLEEP rule, you may just read it here.

3. No Experts to Suggest Personally

As said earlier, you are a newbie in mattress shopping and you need some expert to suggest you a good mattress depending upon your body requirements and health problems (if any). There are chances that you’ll find someone experienced in a physical store to help you out but while shopping online you need to make your decision on the basis of user’s reviews.

I am neither going to force you to shop online nor from a physical store. It should be your very own decision, and you better decide it by yourself.

If you have a significant prior experience from a physical store, then it would be wise to buy your new mattress from them and vice-versa.

The Twist

There’s also the other way around which you may have found on many other sites. Maybe it is good, but being a salesperson myself I don’t think it’s fair.

The way is to visit your nearby local store and look for the best mattress around. Apply FFF rule and if you find it great note down the brand name, size and model number. Now the twist is to search for the same product on Amazon or a similar site and order it from there.

This way you can completely avoid all the disadvantages of shopping online. Well that’s an excellent method, right? I agree.

Why don’t I like it? The salesperson who has done hard work for suggesting you and helping you choose the best mattress didn’t get a sale. That’s sad, and his efforts earned him nothing.

However, if you’re getting a great deal online and you’re saving a good amount of money, then you should go and shop online. You’re not a millionaire, and you too want to keep your pocket light.

So now you found a perfect mattress, ordered it, and relaxing on your couch? Wake up. You need to protect your mattress and want it to be durable for years, not months.

If you don’t have a mattress protector and your¬†mattress has got stained, then here is the best mattress cleaning guide to help you out.

Nothing does a better work in protecting a mattress than a mattress protector. You can read more about mattress protectors and its benefits on this page. I have listed ten best protectors too, hope you find it useful.

Mattress? Done. Mattress protector? Done. Now, what?

How about a Good Pillow?

If you’re waking up with a twisted neck and want to get rid of it, then changing a pillow should be your priority.

Sleeping positions, sitting posture are another factors that can cause a neck pain.

There are four types of pillows you can buy to get rid of a neck pain.

I don’t have any buying guide about pillows but a short post on best pillows for neck pain.

Go through it if you have time and choose the best pillow type for you.

Finally, you’re all set to rock your bed with a new mattress, mattress protector and comfortable set of pillows.

Typical User Review

I took a chance and ordered the twin size for my sons room. I LOVE it! Soft, comfortable, high quality, and I would highly recommend!
This came right to my door in a duffel bag and within minutes we had it unpacked, and were laying on it. Perfect purchase for my son’s room, and my husband keeps sneaking into his room to take naps on it. For this price, you really can’t go wrong. I read all the reviews here as well as on Walmart site before buying and am so happy I got it.

I’m honestly shocked people shell out $2,000 for tempurpedic mattresses. At $180, I feel like I’m sleeping on a cloud. I fall asleep within 10 minutes (never before thought that was possible) and wake up with no back pain. This mattress is the perfect combination of plush and firm. It is soft enough to form to your curves, but there is enough support so that you don’t feel like you’re being engulfed. I’m 145 lbs and I feel that I only sink in an inch in the mattress.

I’m a twenty-something in a city with a high cost of living. I move every time the rent goes up. So i usually buy a mattress that will last me 1-2 years and then when i move it goes to the curb/craigslist. This means that my price range for mattress shopping is around $150. The last one i had was an Ikea Sultan mattress. It became increasingly uncomfortable in a matter of months. This new mattress- the Sleep Master- was about $40 more, but with free shipping it ends up being the same price as the ikea sultan + shipping. The Sleep Master 6″ is absolutely amazing for the price. It’s only been a month, but my quality of sleep has actually increased. As a side sleeper, i feel supported much more than with spring mattresses or the old ikea mattress.

This is the deal of a lifetime. This is the most comfortable bed we have ever had. As always shipping was fast and easy. The bed unrolled easily. (The video another member posted was very helpful) it rolls out upside down. So if you know that you can save time by unrolling it upside down so it ends up right side up. Everyone said the mattress would have a slight smell, but our did not. I guess we got lucky. My sister has a $5000 dollar memory foam mattress and this one is just as and possibly more comfortable. Don’t spend more then you have to, this mattress is worth ten times the price.

Absolutely amazing! If you have any doubts…don’t. I decided to give the product a chance because the price was right and I’m so glad I did. The mattress came tightly rolled in a box that was encased in another box. We cut open the plastic and “tada” it was an awesome, soft, comfortable mattress.

This bed is for my special needs son because his old “new” bed purchased from a brick and mortar store was a big POS with springs sticking out. I tried this new mattress and even after trying to feel the springs, I could not.

I love this mattress! So does my daughter. She even jumped up and down on it (she’s 9) and did not damage it. I thought I’d come home to a huge box the shape of a mattress, but I didn’t. The mattress comes compressed and rolled up in a bag. I’m not sure if it’s possible to put it back in the bag once you open it. It is so nice to sleep on. And the price! Wow. You’ll love yours too.

Sizes Available – Twin, Full, Queen, King

Height – 9 Inch and Weight – 60.2 Pounds

Mattress Type – Gel Infused 5 Layer Memory Foam

Typical User Review

I was very skeptical about buying this product because I’ve read reviews from other products similar to this Olee memory foam bed. Most of them stated that the mattress didn’t fully expand to its described thickness even after a few days or that the mattress was too firm. So I decided to buy this 9 inch mattress instead of the usual 8 inches because I expected it to only expand to 8 inches. But within the first 10 minutes of opening the mattress, it already expanded to 8 inches and a few hours after that, it fully expanded to 9 inches. Not only that, but the mattress was also very comfortable. Not too firm at all!

knaves nailed it! This mattress is very soft and mushy. There is no initial resistance as with other memory foam mattresses and you just sink right in. Best suited for side sleepers, I think. I have also purchased the Signature Sleep 12″ memory foam mattress which is awesome if you sleep on your back but a bit firm for side sleepers.
